Perricone MD Cold Plasma sounds like a miracle in a jar and comes with an incredibly high price tag for most customers. Those looking to improve their beauty on a budget may have a hard time keeping their supply current. Aside from the hefty price tag, the biggest complaint from user reviews was the cream’s strong, fishy odor. This likely comes from the source providing all of the included omega 3s and is a natural smell, rather than a sign of any ill effects. Still, the smell has been described as unpleasant, particularly for use on the face and around the nose.
A slight odor might be worth the potential benefits, however. One product claiming to address so much is a rather large promise, and if it really can do so much, it might just be worth a little funk and a big price.
Most of the science behind the active ingredients in the Cold Plasma cream is fairly sound; however one of the ingredients might be a cause for concern amongst some consumers. One of the preservatives in the cream, phenoxyethanol, has shown a wide range of adverse effects ranging from minor skin irritation to cancer risks and neurological degradation in lab studies.

Key Ingredients
Most of the ingredients included in Perricone Cold Plasma Plus+ are intended to be helpful to the skin. Of course, this is the intention of the product, so that makes perfect sense. However, there are a few outliers which raise red flags, such as Ceteareth-20 and Phenoxyethanol. Apart from being chemical concoctions which mean nothing when tacked on to a huge laundry list, they aren’t so stellar when put under the microscope themselves. Below, we break down some of the best- and worst- ingredients in this so called all-in-one powerhouse cream.
Phosphatidylcholine
While this one might be a tongue twister, Phosphatidylcholine is actually an incredibly common substance. So common, in fact, that you might have had some for breakfast. It’s found in everyday foods such as eggs, soybeans, mustard, and sunflowers. It’s a natural alternative to penetrating chemicals, and since it binds so well to water, it helps deliver a powerful dose of essential nutrients deep into the skin.
Dimethyl MEA (DMAE)
DMAE is a derivative of vitamin B, and is often taken as an oral supplement to improve alertness. In skin care products, DMAE has been shown to have skin-calming effects, and restore some firmness. It also helps to improve the skin’s contour, lift, and tone. However, to retain efficacy and stability, DMEA must be contained in an environment with a pH level of ten. That is highly alkaline, and not good for skin. To put it into perspective, the average person’s skin has a pH level of five to six, just a little acidic. Bleach has a pH level of ten. DMAE thrives and functions best in a pH level of ten. That means, to reap the full benefits of DMAE, the product containing it must have a pH level similar to household bleach. Since I’m hoping that’s not the case, then we can only assume that Perricone Cold Plasma Plus+ does not reap the full effect of DMAE.
Dihydroxyacetone (DHA)
This natural carbohydrate is an essential fatty acid which delivers a superior level of hydration. It is often used in tanning formulas, and regulates skin-staining thanks to its ability to permeate the dermis. While generally well-tolerated and anti-reactionary, DHA usually doesn’t coexist well with most SPF, so it is recommended to apply additional SPF when utilizing anything with DHA.
L-Tyrosine
Commonly found in soy products, nuts, and some dairy products, this amino acid is produced in our bodies naturally. When applied in additional amounts, it helps brighten overall skin tone. This is because L-Tyrosine helps stimulate the production of melanin, the pigment which colors our skin. It is also thought to help create more collagen as well, especially when used alongside ascorbic acid.

There is an incredible amount of science in Perricone Cold Plasma Plus+, which is to be expected from a formula created by a doctor. However, some of the science just does not work out correctly. We don’t know the pH of the final product, and thus can’t know how effective some of the key ingredients are. While many users swear that Perricone Cold Plasma Plus+ works wonders, several others also claim they have seen lackluster results or worse, irritation. There’s something slightly fishy about Perricone Cold Plasma Plus+, and it is not just the smell.
