Two kinds of evidence
Every review is built on one or both of the following.
Hands-on testing
For some products, our team uses the product ourselves over a period of normal use and records how it performs: texture, finish, scent, wear time, how skin or hair responds, and whether it lives up to what's on the label.
Voice of the customer
For many products, we analyze what large numbers of real buyers have said across retailers and review platforms. We filter out duplicate, incentivized, and suspicious reviews, then look past the star rating to the specifics: which features people consistently praise, which complaints keep recurring, and which problems are widespread rather than isolated. A single bad experience is an anecdote; the same complaint from hundreds of buyers is a finding.
Some reviews draw on customer analysis, some on our own testing, and some on both. Whichever applies, the evidence is examined by our writers and analysts, and every review is written and approved by a member of our editorial team.
What we look at
Every category is different, but most reviews weigh the following.
Claims vs. reality
Does the product actually do what the brand says it does?
Ingredients
Key actives, common irritants, and whether the formula suits the skin or hair type it targets.
Performance
Results, ease of use, and how the product holds up over weeks rather than days.
Customer experience
Satisfaction, recurring issues, and who the product tends to work for — and who it doesn't.
Value
Price relative to size, performance, and comparable alternatives.
Brand practices
Return policies, subscription terms, and how the company handles problems.
Keeping reviews current
Formulas change, prices move, and new customer feedback keeps coming in. We revisit reviews when something material changes and update the date when we do.
How we stay independent
No brand can buy a rating or a recommendation, and brands never see our reviews before they're published. Learn more about how we're supported.
