Protect Your Skin from the Sun

Just one sunburn every two years can triple your likelihood of melanoma skin cancer.

The number one cause of “age-related” skin damage actually has nothing to do with how old you are; it’s all about how much time you spend in the sun. So if you only ever purchase one beauty product for your face, make sure it has some SPF in it. It’ll protect your skin from the dangerous UVA and UVB rays which dry out your skin, cause a toxic buildup of oxidative damage, and permanently dismantle the connective tissues in your dermis.

And if it also has moisturizing properties, it’s that much better!

When your skin tans, the melanocytes (the skin cells which are responsible for making your skin darker after sunlight exposure) produce certain toxic substances along with producing more melanin.

Think of it like burning coal for electricity. Generating that power serves a good purpose, but the dirty smog isn’t worth it if you care about your skin looking ageless and healthy. Those toxic by-products cause oxidative damage which weakens and destroys collagen and elastin in your skin. When these connective tissues stop being robust and healthy, it causes sagging and wrinkles which can make you look older than you actually are.

Don’t Use Too Many Products!

With the seemingly limitless options out there, it’s hard to know what to include, and what to leave out.

Despite what a cosmetics industry would have you believe, there’s definitely too much of a good thing when it comes to your beauty products and your skin care regimen.

There are many different reasons for this. For starters, piling too many moisturizers on your skin is a great way to clog your pores and create acne problems, even if you’re long past puberty.

But you can go too far to the other side of the spectrum also.

Too many exfoliating ingredients will do more than just slough off dull, dead skin cells – they’ll dry out the healthy cells and keep you looking just as bad.

Furthermore, the more products you put on your face, the more chemicals you put into your skin. If you’re using the wrong products, this can definitely do more harm than good for anyone who’s trying to achieve a more natural look.

Don’t Stop at Your Jawline – Keep Going South

There’s nothing more jarring than staring at someone who looks 30 years old in the face and 50 years old from the neck down. You need to pay just as much attention to your neck and your décolletage as you do your face.

If you’re out and about in the sun, these areas will get the same exact sun exposure at your face will. And while the drastic contrast between your face, neck, and chest may serve as a walking billboard for the effectiveness of your chosen beauty product(s), it’s not a good look!

Nighttime Is the Right Time for Skin Care

The average adult (should) sleep for 8 hours a day. That’s 8 uninterrupted hours for deep skin conditioning!

Paying more attention to your nightly beauty routine is much more effective at preventing and even repairing daily skin damage than focusing more of your attention on your morning regimen.

The main reason for this is because your body goes to work while you sleep at night. It goes through a nightly spring cleaning, restoring and regenerating the tissues of your dermis. And if you have the right products on your skin in the evening, it compounds your body’s ability to fix and repair itself.

Don’t get us wrong – you should still definitely use something in the morning to protect your skin from the daily wear and tear you’re about to face. Remember the SPF we mentioned earlier?

But if you don’t, can’t, or won’t use a morning product, you can still do your skin a tremendous favor buy tailoring a comprehensive nighttime beauty routine.

Ladies Pinch, Whores Use Rouge

But to be honest, doing both would probably be great for your look.

This iconic quote from the longest running cartoon show on the planet, The Simpsons, actually holds a nugget of truth to it.

We’re not saying that using some blush here or some bronzer there has any influence on your sexuality, of course – but taking a more natural approach to giving your skin a healthy glow can help you reap some benefits.

Giving yourself a bit of a massage with your beauty routine helps stimulate blood flow through every single layer of your skin. And the more of an oxygen-rich, nutrient-rich flush of blood to your cheeks that you can get, the healthier and more beautiful your skin will be.

Keep it Simple and Affordable

The cosmetics industry accounts for $500 billion per year in America alone!

Touching back on what we said earlier about not using too many products, you also shouldn’t be investing hundreds or thousands of dollars in an overly complex beauty regimen.

For the average person’s skin, spending $750 on a ridiculously complex beauty kit with a day cream and a night cream and eye serum and an SPF concealer and an exfoliator and a toner (and much, much more) isn’t necessary.

The dirtiest little secret that the beauty and skincare industry hides from most people is that some of the most affordable, most mundane drugstore beauty creams are as good or better than something you might spend two, three, or five times as much money on.

Granted, finding these gems can be a little tough. After all, it’s not like the more affordable beauty products are getting a huge amount of attention. But take a little time to ask for recommendations from friends, family, and reliable experts online. It’s one of the best ways to find beauty products that are both affordable and effective at helping you maintain that ageless skin.

Make Sure Your Skincare Routine Is the Right One for You

Everyone’s skin is just a little different. So too should our skincare be.

Even the most highly lauded skin care routines won’t be a silver bullet for everyone. What works well for someone with oily skin is probably going to be bad for someone with dry skin. If you have combination skin, skin allergies, or suffer from certain conditions like eczema, all of those will require a very specific skin care regimen to address those issues.

Price also plays a big part in how your beauty regimen will look. Your budget will play a major role in dictating which products you can afford and how you use them.

But the most important thing – no matter what you use or how you use it – is that you pick the products and the regimen which will best help you keep your skin looking ageless for as long as possible.
